Studying medicine in Lithuania
Medicine is the single most asked-about subject. This is what the picture actually looks like, without hype or discouragement.
How the programme is structured
Medicine in Lithuania is not split into bachelor's and master's; it runs as one long integrated programme. Dentistry and veterinary medicine are structured similarly.
Programmes open to international students are taught in English. But because clinical years involve patient contact, many programmes include Lithuanian language courses in the curriculum. Worth knowing upfront: "fully English-taught" describes the theoretical teaching, not bedside practice.
How competitive it really is
Health programmes receive among the highest number of applications in Lithuania and places are limited. Applications can close earlier than in other fields.
High school science grades — biology and chemistry — carry direct weight in assessment. Some programmes add a test or interview. For a student whose grades are borderline, applying only to medicine is risky; a second field should be planned alongside.
Recognition — don't skip this
Earning a medical degree in Lithuania and being able to practise in Türkiye are two separate processes. If you plan to work in Türkiye, research the recognition requirements before you apply; they change over time.
The same applies within the EU: an EU degree helps with recognition, but every country has its own professional registration process.
When to start
Preparation for health programmes should begin at least a year before the intended application period. The chain runs: English certificate → diploma and transcript → sworn translation and certification → application → admission → visa and residence documents.
Each link waits on the one before it. The most common mistake is leaving translation and certification to the last week; those steps can take weeks, not days.
Which schools to look at
The first institution to look at is the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences in Kaunas. Vilnius University's medical faculty also admits international students.
Both publish their requirements and calendars on their own official pages. I don't list figures or dates here because they change year to year.
